How to Set Up Yoast SEO for the First Time

If you have just installed Yoast SEO, then the next thing that should come to your mind is how to set it up. A lot of WordPress users have installed this plugin and get confused from where to start from. Yes. You are not alone. This happens especially if you are a beginner, and new into the system. As I always tell people, I have experience in blogging for the past 4 years. These period of trying out new things was a journey of experience in the blogsphere.

In this article, I will guide you to set up Yoast SEO plugin after installation. I will be using screenshots so that you fully comprehend in details hoe to go about it.

  • You should have at least a good working PC connected to the internet.

What is Yoast SEO Plugin?


Before you stumbled on this article, I believe you wanted to know in details about it. Yoast SEO is the most complete WordPress SEO plugin. It handles the technical optimization of your site & assists with optimizing your content.

Every blogger would want to rank her blog. It is one thing to write an article, and another thing for your article to rank on Google Search Engine. If after you have been blogging for the past one year and none of your article ranks on google, then all these while, you have been wasting your time. And before you know it, you will feel discouraged. I believe this is not your case.


How do I Install Yoast SEO Plugin?

Yoast SEO Plugin is installed just like every other plugin on the WordPress Directory. You can either download the plugin from the official wordpress directory, or you install it directly from your site/blog admin dashboard.


How to Set Up Yoast SEO

The below are the simple steps to set up this plugin:


After installing the plugin, just by the left panel of your dashboard, you should be able to see something like this:

#2. Click on Open the configuration wizard to open Yoast SEO for WordPress installation wizard.

#3. You will see two options.

  • Option A: My site is live and ready to be indexed
  • Option B: My site is under construction and should not be indexed

Make a selection and click on NEXT.

#4. On the next page, you are given options to select from. The options include:

  • A blog
  • An online shop
  • A news channel
  • A small offline business
  • A corporation
  • A portfolio
  • Something else

If you are setting up a blog, then go ahead to select A Blog. And the click on Next.


#5. On the next page, you are required to answer a question Does your site represent a person or an organization?

Select your answer, and then click on Next.

NOTE: If you choose Organization, you will be required to provide The name of the organization, Provide an image of the organization logo, and other necessary social medial URLs.

#6. ON the next page, you should see the below questions:

  1. Search engines should show “Posts” in search results: Click on YES.
  2. Search engines should show “Pages” in search results: Click on YES.

And click on Next.

#7. Does, or will, your site have multiple authors? If Yes is your case, go ahead and select it. If not do the same.

#8. In the Title settings page, input your Website name, select your desired Title Separator. Choose the symbol to use as your title separator. This will display, for instance, between your post title and site name.

Click on Next.

#9. You can decide to Join Yoast Newsletter using your email if you would like to keep up-to-date about Yoast SEO for WordPress. This is optional. Click on Next.

#10. Click on Next.

#11. Click on Close, and you will be taken back to your dashboard.
